A Week of First-year Students. The first steps along the way of becoming students

    On the results of entrance campaign-2010 the number of first-year students at the Mining University has increased. Due to this fact it was decided  to divide students onto several streams  during the period of  the Week of First-year Students, giving the opportunity to  every freshman to get enough  attention.

    On Monday, August 30, the first day of the Week of First-year Students passed in merry atmosphere with great interest and cognition.  It began with a traditional lecture of the Rector of the University Nikolai Petrovich Kosarev for students of  the Mining-Engineering faculty and the faculty of Secondary Professional Education. The students learned a lot of about traditions of the University, about organization of studies, about conditions of life at students’ hostels and about all possibilities and opportunities available at the University for realization of  aspirations for research and scientific, public and sports or creative activity.

    The students received reference-books for first-year students and for the first time, together with the Rector sang the Hymn of the Mining University. Nikoilai Petrovich also announced about the competition on the best performance of the Hymn, which will take place on September 1 at the cultural-mass entertainment devoted to the “Day of Knowledge”.

    After the lecture Nikolai Petrovich  presented the students to curators, who were students of the University themselves and were ready willingly to acquaint students under their patronage with the way of life at the University and to help to establish contacts with each other. It is very important because if the students  become friendly and close to each other now  it will influence their  future student life in the groups,.

    The first-year students visited the property of the University – the Miracle-Worker Nicolas Church which was rehabilitated from disruption by the collective of the University. At the church Arch-priest Vladimir Zaitsev met with the students  and  had a  familiarization talk with them. The program of the first two days included a visit to the University library, Historical  museum of Yekaterinburg city, museum of the University history, Ural Geological Museum and the Church-on-Blood.

    There was also a presentation of a Students’ Cultural Center, Creative faculty, CA “Gorny Crystal”, where students had the opportunity to assess how  interesting and  many-sided  activity at the University was and also had the opportunity  to choose and decide what a creative collective to go.

    The Week of First-year students will be finished on Saturday, during the performance of  the play “The Devil and Virgin” at the Sverdlovsk State Academic Theater of Musical Comedy.

    On Wednesday we shall celebrate the holiday in honor of  the “Day of Knowledge” which will take place at 14.00  on the area before the Second academic building!  In addition, the first-year students will meet with  leaders of students’ Trade Unions and students’ public organizations, and will learn about their rights and obligations from them.
