University Emblem
An emblem is a heraldic sign meeting the requirements of modern heraldic science and reflecting a specific character of a higher mining education institution. There is also a motto below the emblem.
The University emblem will be used in seals of the University, as a title image in diplomas, certificates of merit, prints, audio/video products, blank sheets of the Rector, Pro-Rectors, official documents, indoor and outdoor advertisement. It is a distinctive mark of the educational institution.
University flag

The University flag is a rectangular cloth with the width-to-length ratio of 2:3. It reproduces the symbols of the University emblem.
The flag may be reproduced both by a cloth and a pendant with the ratio mentioned above.
The flag may be hoisted on (or fixed on flagstaffs in front of) the buildings of the University. The Heraldry Council under the President of the Russian Federation has approved the emblem and the flag of the USMU giving a formal status to the symbols of our University.
In the register of flags and emblems of the Russian Federation the emblem of Russia is registered under number 1 and the flag of Russia under number 2.
Among many hundred thousand areas, regions, cities and settlements only a few of them are honoured with official state symbols from the presidential power.
The emblem and the flag of the USMU are registered under number 179 and 180 in the state register of flags and emblems.
University uniform
The Ural State Mining University is one of the leading higher schools in Russia training specialists in geology, geophysics and mining industry. It has a long and rich history. Like any self-respecting higher school, it has certain traditions and peculiarities. One of these peculiarities is the creation of its own symbolic attributes: emblem, flag and unique uniform.
The students and graduates of mining schools in pre-revolutionary Russia wore a uniform but then this tradition was lost. The uniform evokes a sensation of spiritual and professional fraternity, disciplines and creates conditions for maintenance of a high cultural level and decent public conduct. Therefore the uniform revival contributes to raising the status of its owners in the eyes of other people.
The uniform has the following peculiarities: shoulder straps, chevrons (indicating the status of the person wearing the uniform), patches, lapels and uniform buttons.
Motto of the University
There is a ribbon with the motto “Think about mining” on the emblem of our University. The text of the motto is taken from the biblical message of Saint Paul the Apostle: “Look for gornee, … think about gornee” (to the Colossians, 3:1,2) where “gornee” means superior, spiritual and heavenly.
The motto reminds us that the founder of the Mining University the imperator Nicolas II was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church and as a saint he is the patron saint of the University.
The word “gornee” is assonant with the name of the University (gorniy, i.e. mining). It makes the motto and the emblem heraldically “speaking” (“hinting” at the name of the emblem owner).
The motto text can be interpreted widely: both in the spiritual and ordinary sense (including as a call to students and teachers to take care of the alma mater in general and educational activity success in particular).
